In countries like Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo, rebel groups have funded wars against their governments through the control and sale of rough diamonds, known as ‘conflict diamonds’.

Locals are forced to search for diamonds with little rest and no money. Their communities are destroyed in the process. The rough diamonds they mine are sold to anyone willing to pay the asking price; namely rogue states and terrorist organisations. The money that is generated from the sale is then used to kill, maim and destroy.

Even though conflict diamonds, at their peak, made up less than 4% of annual production, the industry has declared that one diamond sold in this way is one too many.

According to the Kimberly process, any shipment of rough diamonds crossing an international border must be sealed in a tamper proof container and accompanied by a government validated Kimberly Process Certificate. Resistant to forgery and uniquely numbered, each certificate issued in this way includes a detailed description of the contents of the container. To receive these shipments you must be a participant in the Kimberly process.
